Plywood, brown wrapping paper, nails and entomologist’s foam. Pencil,
Indian and acrylic ink on The Butterflies of the British Isles
(Richard South, F.E.S, London, Editions 1906-1947)
110 x 120 x 150 cm

The Butterflies of the British Isles was first published in 1906 and was reprinted up until the 1960s. Like the slight variations within the same species of butterflies that happens over time and with the changes to the environment and life conditions, the different editions of the books vary slightly in shape, size, colour and weight; e.g. during the Second World War the book was thinner and lighter, and the paper of a speckled bluer quality.
